Liverpool make ‘first contact’ over Salah

Not content to begin closing a deal with Christian Benteke, Liverpool have apparently made first contact with Chelsea over former transfer target Mohamed Salah.

According to Italian source Calcio Mercato Web, the Reds are closely monitoring the circumstances involving the Egyptian attacker.

Scheduled to continue a loan with Fiorentina, having signed an 18-month deal in January, Salah refuses to report to La Viola.

The situation has touched off a controversial dispute between Chelsea and the Florentine club, with the Blues already having received a fee for the player. Threats of legal action from Florence were even made earlier in the month.

Salah was a top mids-eason target for Liverpool in January 2014, only to move to Chelsea from Swiss side Basel for £11m.

After failing to impress at Stamford Bridge, he scored nine goals in 26 appearances in Serie A.

Chelsea, currently on their pre-season tour in North America, did not include Salah in the traveling squad, and he seemingly has no future with the defending Premier League Champions.

Rumours have persisted that Salah was looking to join Inter Milan, which sparked a heated series of exchanges between the two Italian rivals and further complicated the murky situation.

However, Inter have since seemed to cool toward the 23 year-old winger. Roma and Juventus were also potentially interested.

Yet, Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on things and are understood to have made contact with Chelsea regarding the status of the loan agreement with Fiorentina, as well as any possible UEFA action.

It is believed that Liverpool would make no formal offer until the dispute is resolved and clarity about the player’s availability are made clear.
