Liverpool travel to Aston Villa tonight looking to advance to the fourth round of this year’s FA Cup.
The Reds may have been handed what should be an easier passage into the next round as the Villa first team training ground was forced to close as players went into self-isolation on Thursday owing to a ‘significant’ virus outbreak within the camp.
Jurgen Klopp‘s side have more than FA Cup qualification to play for tonight as they set out to avenge the humiliating 7-2 Premier League defeat suffered earlier in the campaign at Villa Park.
That said, Liverpool’s domestic cup competition record under Klopp isn’t much to write home about. Last season’s jaunt into the fifth round, where they were ultimately eliminated by Chelsea, was the furthest the German boss has taken his side in the FA Cup in his first five years in charge.
A combination of difficult third round ties and heavy squad rotation in favour of both the Champions League and Premier League has meant the Reds haven’t lived up to their billing in the oldest cup competition in the world in recent seasons.
