No January loan deals for Neco and Rhys Williams

Liverpool‘s young defensive duo Rhys Williams and Neco Williams look set to remain a part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad for the remainder of this season.

The Daily Star reported that Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t be letting any of his defenders leave the club in January after there had been tentative interest in the 19-year-old duo – perhaps unsurprising given the injuries already suffered by the Reds this season.

Both Williamses have featured more than they might have anticipated in the first team this season, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out for what is likely to be the remainder of the campaign.

When the 2020/21 season began, Welsh right-back Neco Williams might have fancied his chances of playing understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold with enhanced involvement in cup competitions.

However, his namesake Rhys would perhaps have been planning for a season of development, either with the Reds’ academy or out on loan once again after spending last season with Kidderminster Harriers in the National League.

Instead, it looks as though both will remain as part of the first team squad at Anfield as Klopp plots a way to Liverpool attempting to defend their Premier League crown.

Teenage centre-half Rhys was recently linked with a move to a host of Championship clubs before Klopp put the mockers on any deal.

Liverpool have seen the benefit of sending their young talents out on loan this season, with Harvey Elliott currently blossoming in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers.

The club may have been tempted to send the duo away to enhance their development, but owing to the Reds’ current situation, their importance to Klopp cannot be underestimated.

There would likely have been no shortage of takers for either of the Williamses, but given the relentless fixture schedule and harrowing injury misfortunes of recent weeks, there was no way Klopp was going to let two players who have stepped up admirably when called upon leave the club.

The only concern is that the refusal to allow Rhys Williams to leave may be a nod towards the club’s current stance on possibly signing a new central defender in January.
