Liverpool transfer news: Inter Milan line up fresh meeting to seal €25m Curtis Jones deal

Liverpool are reportedly gearing up for a significant round of negotiations next week as Italian giants Inter Milan look to finalise a deal for midfielder Curtis Jones.

According to reports from Italy, relayed via Sport Witness, the San Siro outfit are preparing to hold a fresh meeting with Anfield chiefs to bridge the gap in their respective valuations of the 25-year-old academy graduate.

With the Liverpool transfer news landscape transforming by the day under a newly restructured hierarchy, Curtis Jones‘ future on Merseyside appears increasingly fragile.

The academy graduate is reportedly eager to explore a continental challenge, dropping multiple “transfer signals” to the Italian champions as he enters the final stretch of his Anfield contract.

Inside The numbers: The €25m compromise ‘sweet spot’

The financial reality of the deal is now coming into stark focus. Inter Milan initially tested Liverpool’s resolve with an opening bid of €20 million (£17.1m). That approach was swiftly rebuffed by Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, who placed a firm valuation of €30 million to €35 million (£25.6m – £30m) on the 25-year-old midfielder.

However, Italian sources indicate that neither club wants negotiations to drag out into a protracted summer saga. A clear “sweet spot” has emerged at €25 million (£21.4m).

The Compromise “Sweet Spot”€25m (£21.4m)Next Week’s Agenda

Next week’s meeting will serve as the battleground to see if Inter can stretch their budget to hit that €25 million compromise mark, potentially including structured add-ons or a future sell-on percentage to satisfy Liverpool’s demands.

Contract standoff forces Liverpool’s hand

The urgency behind this transfer stems directly from Jones’ contractual situation. The midfielder’s current deal runs out in June 2027, meaning he is officially entering the final 12 months of his contract.

With contract extension talks firmly deadlocked and the player showing little desire to commit his long-term future to Anfield, Liverpool find themselves in a precarious position.

The club is acutely aware that this transfer window represents the final opportunity to command a significant premium for the homegrown star, rather than risk losing him for nothing or watching his valuation plummet in January.

Furthermore, with Premier League squad cost ratio regulations continuing to heavily penalise clubs, generating a pure profit bank injection from an academy graduate is a highly attractive proposition for the Reds’ accounting books.

The Iraola revolution and a teammate’s hint

This live negotiation lands in the middle of an unprecedented period of upheaval at Anfield. Following a disappointing season that saw Liverpool fail to retain their Premier League crown, head coach Arne Slot was axed, with newly appointed manager Andoni Iraola stepping into the hot seat.

While alternative midfield names like Adam Wharton and Lamine Camara have already been linked with incoming moves to kickstart Iraola’s tenure, room must be cleared in the squad. Jones, who registered 49 appearances across all competitions last season, looks to be the primary candidate sacrificed to fund the rebuild.

The player himself appears completely enamored by the prospect of moving to the blue-and-black half of Milan. Rumours of his impending departure were fueled further by Liverpool teammate Federico Chiesa, who openly admitted that Jones had been grilling him for inside knowledge on Italian life.

If next week’s face-to-face summit progresses smoothly, those technical skills will be on display at the San Siro next season.

While netting a potential €25 million pure-profit fee for an academy graduate entering the final year of his contract makes logical sense on a spreadsheet, the timing of this move is nothing short of terrifying.

Losing Curtis Jones in a vacuum is manageable. Losing him in the exact same window that sees legendary talisman Mohamed Salah and defensive bedrock Andy Robertson walk out the door is a monumental gamble by FSG and sporting director Richard Hughes.

Jones offered tactical continuity, local identity, and a robust body in the engine room, featuring 49 times last season. By allowing him to follow Salah and Robertson out of the exit door, Liverpool aren’t just conducting a standard summer refresh under Andoni Iraola they are entirely gutting the leadership group and emotional core of the squad.

If next week’s meeting in Italy culminates in a €25 million agreement, the pressure shifting onto the incoming regime to instantly replace that lost experience will be immense.

Selling Jones secures the financial “sweet spot,” but it leaves Iraola facing an unprecedented rebuilding job before he has even taken charge of his first competitive match at Anfield.
