Liverpool signing €50m-rated Spanish midfielder unlikely due to ‘massive wage demands’

It has been reported extensively over the last few weeks that Liverpool is interested in Atletico Madrid’s Saúl Ñíguez.

The Spaniard is open to leaving the Spanish club this summer after a lack of game time last season.

With that comes the rumours surrounding his future, with Liverpool enquiring over the player.

It had been falsely reported a few weeks ago that the club had placed a £35million bid for Saùl.

As well as that, it has also been stated that a deal for Saúl would cost around the €50m marks.

The player has reportedly been offered around to a number of clubs according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

Sadly for Reds fans, Pearce also states that Saúl’s wage demands have put the club off of a move this summer…

As cited by LFC Transfer Room above, it appears as though the possibility of signing Saúl is dwindling.

The 26-year-old is reportedly on £207,000 a week at Atletico according to SalarySport.com.

With a new move this summer and given his age, the Spaniard will no doubt be demanding more.

For Liverpool, this is simply a move that the club just wouldn’t condone given their strategy and structure.

Players at the club that have a much bigger role in the squad compared to Saúl earn nowhere near his current wage.

It is extremely unrealistic for Jurgen Klopp and the club to meet these demands for a player that had a poor campaign last season.

Fans may start to compare this with the Thiago situation last season, but this time around things are very different.

As Pearce states, unless the club has a change of heart at the last minute, don’t expect Saúl to be signing.
