Mignolet to be Liverpool’s no. 2 for upcoming season

Mignolet to be Liverpool’s no. 2 for upcoming season

If you hadn’t already worked it out, Simon Mignolet will deputise Alisson Becker in between the sticks at Anfield this year.

The Belgian had been linked with a move away from Merseyside, either permanently or on a loan deal, but will instead be retained by the Reds according to Andy Hunter of the Guardian.

Following the goalkeeping waking nightmare suffered by Loris Karius in the Champions League final, Liverpool moved to break the bank in the summer to sign Alisson Becker of AS Roma – the Brazil number one joining for £66 million.

After his arrival, it became established that one of Mignolet and Karius would be leaving during the transfer window.

Turkish outfit Besiktas initially approached Liverpool to negotiate the signing of Mignolet, but were rebuffed in their attempts to sign the 30-year-old, settling instead for Loris Karius on a loan deal with a conditional obligation to buy built into the contract.

Expect to see Mignolet for the immediate future then Reds fans; the veteran probably stacks up as one of the premier no. 2 goalkeepers in the league.
