OTD: Records galore as Liverpool put six past West Brom

On this day (April 26) 2003, Liverpool sunk West Brom 6-0 at the Hawthorns with much-maligned striker Michael Owen scoring four goals on the day.

Amongst the rout Owen, who at the time was adored by Kopites before making numerous dubious transfer decisions, reached the 100 Premier League goal mark – becoming the youngster player to do so aged just 23.

Meanwhile, Milan Baros grabbed a brace as Gerard Houllier’s side moved into fifth place in the top-flight, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.

Finnish central defender Sami Hyypia captained the Reds side on the day, containing such memorable names as Salif Diao, Djimi Traoré and Bruno Cheyrou.

In the action, Owen had opened the scoring early on before Baros doubled the lead shortly before the break.

But it was the second half when Liverpool turned on the style, with the lightning-quick Chester-born ace netting a hat-trick in the second 45 minutes.

Ultimately, Houllier’s side contrived to lose their final two matches, including a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea in a winner takes all final day showdown.

That defeat meant the Merseysiders missed out on Champions League for the 2003/04 campaign.

Back in the present day, following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Newcastle United over the weekend, Liverpool are once again striving to finish inside the top four and will start by looking to pick up three points against arch-enemies Manchester United.
