Pundit slams Liverpool star for ‘big mistake’ in EPL defeat

Liverpool suffered a first defeat of the season in all competitions at the hands of West Ham on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds were beaten 3-2 at the London Stadium and got off to the worst possible start following an early goal direct from a corner.

Jurgen Klopp was critical of the refereeing as goalkeeper Alisson felt he was fouled in the build-up to the goal and no free-kick was awarded when Jordan Henderson was caught high by Aaron Cresswell.

Speaking on Sky Sports, two ex-Anfield men Jamie Redknapp and Jamie Carragher aimed their displeasure at the players.

[Alisson’s] got to save it. He should have done better on all three goals, no doubt about that. But that’s something Liverpool have done for a while and me being in that position, I can’t quite get my head around it. And you look at their defensive record and it’s absolutely fantastic.

Redknapp added: “It’s a big mistake and the goalkeeper has got to do better as well. Alisson had a really poor day.”

Liverpool now sit fourth in the Premier League going into the international break and will face Arsenal on the return to domestic action.

Wonderful Trent Alexander-Arnold goal aside this was a pretty dismal day for the travelling Reds.

Alisson didn’t cover himself in glory having been in stunning form recently, the forwards squandered big opportunities and defensively there were problems from the outset.

Context is needed when you consider the injuries and the fact this was only the first defeat of the season, however, frailties are beginning to show with worrying regularity.

Klopp will be well aware of the issues and fortunately has plenty of time left in the campaign to sort them and allow Liverpool to achieve something spectacular once again.
