Harry Redknapp thinks that wantaway Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling should realise how lucky he is to play for such a “fantastic club”.
Redknapp, speaking at The Telegraph and Virgin Media’s Total Football Live event on Thursday, believes the England international should sign a new contract on Merseyside.
“[Sterling] is very fortunate to be playing at such a fantastic club as Liverpool,” said the former Queens Park Rangers manager. “He should wake up every morning and realise how lucky he is.
“When you walk out at Anfield and hear that crowd singing, there’s no other atmosphere like it.
“He should want to sign his contract, get on with his football, have another good three or four seasons, and do [his] stuff.
“He’s had one-and-a-half top years. He’s got to keep playing, he’s only a boy.
“If it’s not the money, well what is the problem?
“If he wants to win the league, there’s only two clubs he can go to: Manchester City or Chelsea. Maybe Arsenal.”
Former England right-back Danny Mills, also present at the Total Football Live event, warned Sterling that a move wouldn’t be in his best interests, and criticised the youngster’s agent Aidy Ward.
“The advice [Sterling] has had from his agent is horrendous, it’s appalling. His agent is only in it for himself,” Mills claimed.
“I understand he wants to better himself, but he’s still a prodigy.
“Last season, Daniel Sturridge would have been worth £60m, now what’s he worth? A fraction of that. Football changes quickly.”
Mills, 38, also believes Sterling needs to prove himself over the next year before he moves on.
“Sterling hasn’t done it over a sustained period. He needs to do it for another season at least & get his head down.”
“He has great potential. He’s the new Theo Walcott.
“If he gets this huge move, does he become another Jack Rodwell and disappear off the face of the planet? Or Scott Sinclair?”
Jim White from The Telegraph said: “[Sterling] is being paid £35k a week to play for LFC. I know several other people that would do that, quite happily.”
