Having picked up points in each of their last five matches, manager Brendan Rodgers is hoping Liverpool’s recent run of form and the emergence of his summer signings continues heading into Saturday’s clash at Villa Park.
The Reds boss believes the upturn in performances can be a platform for a strong second half as the club continues to fight for three cups, as well as returning to top four status. In comments made during his recent press conference and to the Liverpool Echo, he noted many reasons to be positive.
Rodgers reflected on the current good momentum and confidence in the team while looking forward, adding, “Some of the level of our football last week against Sunderland…was very good. So we’ll go there very positive to get a good result.”
The Reds under Rodgers have enjoyed success against this week’s opponents tallying three straight away wins against the Claret and Blue.
Yet after a challenging start to the campaign, Rodgers focused more on his side’s improving form, “I’ve been very enthused about our team over the course of the last six-seven weeks. We’re starting to return to the flow in our game and our football and the intensity and speed of our game, and that is now getting positive results. We’re creating opportunities again, which is great to see.”
“It was always going to take time. I’ve seen on the training field and in the games that growth and confidence of the players. We’ve had a difficult period in the first four months but hopefully now we’ll use that to our advantage…Now you see the real confidence in the team and how we’re playing and how we’re working and hopefully that’ll continue to show in our results.”
Working through the busy festive period may yet prove key in the crucial month of fixtures and pressure to come. “It’s just development. We want to win and if you’re going to be winning over a period of time then the second part of the season is where you have to enjoy it,” Rodgers told the ‘Echo‘.
He continued, “As a manager I always enjoy coming into that period as there is always trophies or positions up for grabs. We improve with coaching, working, confidence in the way of working and it will be the same this year. We will get better, improve and will fight until the last game of the season.”
Should Liverpool collect all three points from their trip to Birmingham, it will be the first time they have won three on the bounce since the end of the run that brought them to the brink of last season’s league title.
