‘Running’ – Liverpool attacker reveals what Andoni Iraola saw in him

Liverpool secured a 3-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur in what turned out to be an entertaining game of Carabao Cup football at Anfield.

Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dom Szoboszlai were among the goals for Liverpool, but there were other notable performances in what was a much-changed XI from Andoni Iraola.

Lewis Koumas was a bright spark as he capped off an industrious display by getting his hands on the Man of the Match award.

And now, his quotes from an earlier Sky Sports interview have emerged where he talks about how he got the new Liverpool boss’ attention.

Lewis Koumas opens up on Liverpool breakthrough

“Definitely running!” said Koumas when asked to name the quality that endeared him to Iraola.

“You know, pressing the way I press. I’m just hungry to work hard for the team and just do whatever he wants me to do.

“So, yeah, and obviously also qualities come into play. I can finish, I’m really fast, skilful. So, yeah, I’m just glad he likes me.”

Koumas ran his socks off vs Tottenham and got himself into some brilliant positions.

At the risk of sounding harsh, he should have probably had a goal in the first half, but in terms of his overall performance, Iraola will take a lot of encouragement from how he fared.

All that said, one thing is clear: Koumas isn’t here just to make up the numbers, as Iraola really values what he brings to his side as a versatile frontman.
