Gareth Southgate suggests possibility of playing Liverpool’s £90m defender in midfield for Euro 2020

With the Premier League season closing its curtains on Sunday, the Euro 2020 tournament is just around the corner.

Despite being delayed last year, this summer will finally see the 2020 tournament take place.

Manager Gareth Southgate is yet to announce his final 26-man squad for the tournament until the 1st June.

However, he did name a provisional squad of 33 players, including Liverpool’s defensive starlet Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 22-year-old had been left out of Southgate’s England squad for he countries World Cup qualifiers in March.

Luckily for him, after a great string of performances in Liverpool’s last flourish in the Premier League saw him included.

Nonetheless, Southgate has left plenty guessing, after stating that the youngster could play in midfield during Euro 2020…

As cited by AnfieldWatch on Twitter, Southgate eluded to the possibility about Trent during his press conference.

Having played as a right-back for all of his professional career, Trent isn’t a stranger to midfield.

His youth career was spent at right-midfield hence his incredible passing ability.

If Southgate were to take him to the Euro’s in his final 26-man squad, there is a possibility we could see him return there.

It would be more than interesting for Liverpool fans to see, especially Klopp given him being his player.

If Southgate were to use him there in the coming month and things seemed to work, it could become more regular.

Klopp is a fan of players versatility and ability to play other positions, so Trent operating in midfield wouldn’t be a downfall.

matchday.
