Thierry Henry insists Karim Benzema is ‘ahead’ of Mohamed Salah

Former Premier League striker Thierry Henry has insisted that Karim Benzema is currently ‘ahead’ of Liverpool star Mohamed Salah when it comes to best in the world conversations.

Both forwards have started the 2021/22 campaign in scintillating form and are spearheading Real Madrid and the Reds respectively.

On Tuesday night, Benzema was on the scoresheet once again for Los Blancos as Salah scored twice for Jurgen Klopp’s side against Real’s Spanish capital rivals, Atletico Madrid.

Speaking on CBS Sports on Paramount+ (19/10/21 at 7:40 pm) alongside Jamie Carragher, Henry claimed that the Frenchman is a more ‘complete’ player.

The goals that he is scoring, at the moment, are very good. But how can you forget about Lewandowski? How can you forget about Benzema? How can you forget doing it at the national level also? Right now, he’s suffering a bit with Egypt. It’s not easy. But he’s not doing in there yet. But those goals are ridiculous. I love Salah. But he’s not yet the best. Is he the best player right now in the Premier League? By a distance. On current form are you not putting Benzema there right now, with the way he is playing? What he is doing for France and at the Euros? It’s not that clear, for me.

This season Salah has now scored 12 goals and registered four assists in 11 outings whilst Benzema has netted 11 times and set up teammates on a remarkable eight occasions.

Discussing such as this are so difficult due to the differing levels of competition.

All three aforementioned players are well worthy of their place in the conversation and Salah’s current exploits certainly make the 29-year-old the best in the Premier League.

Using international performances to compare and contrast is even more speculative due to the relative strength of the nations as the 33-year-old Benzema is surrounded by world-class talent.

Regardless of who is indeed the best in the world right now – an issue that could be addressed by the awarding of the Ballon d’Or next week, Salah’s form will suffice for Klopp’s side and long may it continue.
