‘Very happy’ – Andoni Iraola says Liverpool trio were ‘dead’ after Tottenham performance

Liverpool delivered a fantastic display at Anfield as a much-changed team swept aside Tottenham 3-1 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dom Szoboszlai sealed the deal for the Reds, while Conor Gallagher’s goal was a mere consolation for the away side.

Liverpool’s team news grabbed a lot of headlines as Andoni Iraola made ten changes to the team that faced Fulham, with only Ronald Araujo retaining his place.

And after the game, the Spaniard singled out James McConnell, Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas for special praise as the trio impressed against a strong Tottenham team.

Andoni Iraola lauds Liverpool trio

“I was happy for them. Different positions, different demands,” said Iraola when asked about the Liverpool trio.

“The best thing is that they were dead when I subbed them. Trey [Nyoni] was cramping, Rio [Ngumoha] couldn’t have run a lot more, McConnell the same.

“When this happens is because you’ve given your all. They have been very energetic, having the willingness to win the duels, feel that they press, I was happy for them, yes.”

It was a fantastic outing for the young Reds as Koumas picked up the man of the match award for his spirited display up front. More to come!
