Virals: Journalist claims Jeremy Doku is among the ‘main’ Liverpool targets

Liverpool have once again been linked with Rennes wonderkid Jeremy Doku this summer after the winger played a starring role at Euro 2020.

Previously billed as the potential successor to Sadio Mane and having turned down the Reds once before in order to focus on developing to the maximum potential, the 19-year-old could be on the Anfield radar.

This comes as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster the attacking options at his disposal, with the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Harry Wilson potentially set to make way for fresh faces.

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti on Twitter, Doku has emerged as a principal target for an attacking berth.

Despite only featuring twice for Belgium in the European Championships, it was a dazzling display against Italy that got the world taking notice of the teenager – earning a 7.10 Sofascore rating whilst winning a penalty and completing eight dribbles.

Described as a ‘diamond in the rough’ by Kevin de Bruyne, Doku has now been capped 10 times at senior level.

During 2020/21 the tricky wideman scored twice and registered another three assists in 30 Ligue 1 outings.

Signing a forward addition this summer has to be a priority at Anfield in order to offer further competition to the established quartet of Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Compatriot Divock Origi only managed one goal last season and frankly fell way short of the levels required.

Whilst the wingers’ numbers fell some way short of Mane’s 16 goals and nine assists last term, given the opportunity to work with the Senegal ace and co would see the talented ace develop.

Valued at £19.8million and under contract in France until 2025 (Transfermarkt), prizing Doku away would likely be an expensive outlay, but not one that couldn’t be more or less funded by the sale of Shaqiri and Origi.

Predominantly a right-winger, the Belgian starlet can operate on either side and in central areas, factors that would endear Klopp to the signing.

matchday.
