Virgil van Dijk could play for Liverpool again this season, claims report

Virgil van Dijk could still play for Liverpool again this season, according to journalist Kevin Palmer.

The Dutchman has been unavailable since October, having suffered cruciate ligament damage in the 2-2 draw away to Everton.

The general consensus has been that Van Dijk will be out for the rest of the campaign, potentially missing Euro 2020 with the Netherlands, too.

According to Palmer in the Sunday World, however, there are ‘some hopes’ that the 29-year-old could be back before the end of the season.

It is an update that will understandably cause excitement among Liverpool supporters, but Van Dijk’s return needs to be treated with great care.

The severity of the injury means rushing him back too soon could have a negative effect on the rest of his career, so playing the long game is the more sensible option.

Should Van Dijk be deemed fit in the spring, however, it could go some way to explaining why a centre-back seemingly isn’t being brought in this month.

Call it wishful thinking, but could Jurgen Klopp know more about the speed of Van Dijk’s recovery than we think?

If he does return earlier than planned, it would be an enormous boost for Liverpool, having been so injury-ravaged in defence this season.
