Jude Bellingham leaves 17-year-old Liverpool star ‘speechless’ with dressing room gesture after England debut

Liverpool starlet Rio Ngumoha admitted he was left entirely “speechless” after receiving his first senior England cap from Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham following a dream debut for the Three Lions.

The 17-year-old winger was introduced as a second-half substitute in England’s hard-fought 1-0 pre-World Cup friendly victory over New Zealand at the Raymond James Stadium.

The cameo capped off a truly remarkable breakthrough campaign for the teenager, who marked his maiden international appearance with a performance that has the football world talking.

Bellingham honours England’s newest debutant

In the immediate aftermath of the narrow victory, the post-match attention shifted from the pitch to the dressing room. Jude Bellingham took centre stage to honour the team’s latest debutant.

The Real Madrid midfielder, who injected much-needed tempo and urgency into England’s play after returning from a recent injury layoff, presented Ngumoha with his legacy cap and offered a glowing endorsement of the teenager’s immense potential on the world stage.

In a video captured and posted to England’s official social media channels, Bellingham showered the youngster with praise:

“Congratulations on an amazing debut. I think we all enjoyed watching it, and obviously you’re going to have a really bright future at your club and hopefully with us as well. It’s a pleasure to give it [the cap] to you because I know there’ll be so many more. So, congratulations.”

A visibly moved and emotional Ngumoha could only offer a short, humble response to the senior leadership and his new international teammates:

“Thank you everyone. I’m happy. I’m speechless! I just want to say thank you. We keep going!”

Tactically “Freestyle”: Tuchel demands more despite milestone night

While the evening belonged to Ngumoha’s historic individual milestone which saw him become the fifth-youngest player to represent England in history, behind only Theo Walcott, Wayne Rooney, Jude Bellingham, and James Prinsep manager Thomas Tuchel was far less enamoured with the collective display.

The German tactician, meticulously preparing his squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America, fiercely criticised a lack of tactical discipline during a sluggish first half.

Tuchel described the team’s display as “freestyle” football that actively deviated from his strict training ground instructions. Despite securing the win, the manager demanded significantly more structure and execution as the Three Lions edge closer to their highly anticipated tournament opener against Croatia.

Ngumoha was drafted into the senior environment alongside a wave of other exciting young hopefuls, including Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Thomas Tuchel brought in Fulham midfielder Josh King and Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri—who spent the second half of last season on loan at Marseille—primarily to boost squad numbers for the warm-up fixtures.

The Liverpool winger earned his call-up following an astonishing club season where he made 29 appearances for the Reds. Thomas Tuchel originally did not expect the youngster to feature heavily in either the New Zealand clash or Wednesday’s upcoming meeting with Costa Rica in Orlando.

However, after replacing Ollie Watkins at the halftime break, Ngumoha immediately transformed the game. Usually utilised on the left flank for Liverpool, he operated on the right wing against New Zealand, giving England an instant, terrifying threat out wide and ultimately walking away with the Player of the Match award.

Despite the overwhelming clamour from fans to see the Liverpool starlet on the plane to the World Cup, Ngumoha will not be able to feature at the tournament this summer even if England suffer a catastrophic injury crisis.

Because Ngumoha was not included in Tuchel’s initial 55-man provisional squad list submitted to FIFA, tournament regulations strictly prohibit him from being drafted into the final 26-man roster as an injury replacement.

The former Chelsea academy graduate remains eligible to feature in England’s final friendly game against Costa Rica, where he is likely to impact the game from the substitutes’ bench once more, before the senior squad jets off to face Croatia.

Seeing Rio Ngumoha light up the international stage at just 17 is a testament to his staggering raw talent and the incredible development he’s undergone since arriving from Chelsea.

To step into a senior England side, completely shift the tempo of a match, and leave Jude Bellingham waxing lyrical in the dressing room shows he belongs at the very highest level.

While it’s a shame FIFA bureaucratic rules prevent him from being a wild-card option for the World Cup, it might be a blessing in disguise for Andoni Iraola. Ngumoha will get a full, uninterrupted pre-season under his belt. With Mohamed Salah gone, there is a massive creative void on Liverpool’s flanks.

The club cannot afford to let Vincent Kompany and Bayern Munich turn his head. Richard Hughes and the Liverpool board need to lock Ngumoha down to a long-term deal immediately and show him that his path to superstardom runs directly through Anfield.
