Roma fan Filippo Lombardi has been found not guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Liverpool supporter Sean Cox before the Champions League semi-final at Anfield on April 24th, 2018.
A jury at Preston Crown Court were told that it was another man, referred to as N40, who threw the punch which left Sean Cox in a coma but Mr Lombardi, from Rome, was alleged to have swung his belt in Sean’s direction at the same time.
Speaking in court on Monday, Lombardi said:
I feel really sorry for him for what happened, it’s a very, very horrible situation for them, but I’m not involved in his assault I didn’t see him when he was standing and I didn’t know the man who hit him.
Lombardi, who was part of a group of 50 Roma fans who walked from Lime Street Station to Anfield on the evening of the match, admitted to swinging his belt at another Liverpool fan, but not at Sean Cox. He said he’d removed his belt in case he needed to use it as a weapon if he was attacked.
The 21-year-old is due to be sentenced for another crime, however, after he admitted violent disorder ahead of the game in April at an earlier hearing.
As reported by Radio City News, Mark Brown, the judge at Preston Crown Court says that he does not accept that Lombardi didn’t play a key role in the violent disorder ahead of the game at Anfield but he has been found not guilty of an attack on Sean Cox.
