Journalist reveals Barcelona attempted last-minute Thiago deal

Barcelona made a last-minute attempt to sign Thiago, according to the Guardian‘s Fabrizio Romano.

The Spaniard became arguably one of Liverpool’s biggest signings in years last month, completing a move from Bayern Munich.

It has been revealed that former club Barca tried to seal a reunion at the Camp Nou before Thiago completed his switch to Liverpool, but to no avail.

That’s because Jurgen Klopp had already ‘convinced and enthralled’ Thiago, persuading him to join his revolution at Anfield.

I believe Thiago could be one of the most significant signings of the Klopp era, such is his world-class ability.

Liverpool’s midfield has been superb in recent years, but it has occasionally lacked a truly elite level of guile and control in the middle of the park.

Thiago brings that, however, enjoying a 90.5 percent pass completion rate for Bayern in the Bundesliga last season, while his average of 3.6 successful dribbles per 90 minutes is more than any of Liverpool’s current midfielders, showing he can carry the ball in tight areas.

It also speaks volumes that Thiago wanted to join Liverpool over Barca, highlighting their current standing in the European game.

At 29, he still has enough in the tank to enjoy several years at the very top, hopefully adding yet another dimension to the Reds’ game.
