The winning goal came from Curtis Jones – who had been impressive throughout – the local lad met a deep Neco Williams delivery to deftly stroke the ball home at the back post.
Given the difficulty of the situation in which Liverpool currently find themselves, to qualify with a game to spare and seal top spot in the group is an achievement in itself. Klopp will now have the luxury of resting most, if not all, of his stars next Wednesday when his side travel to face FC Midtjylland.
Here’s how we rated the Reds from the rewarding night against Ajax…
Caoimhin Kelleher - 9
Seems to have grown in stature and confidence from last season’s Carabao Cup appearances. Phenomenal performance from the 22-year-old after his surprise inclusion.
Neco Williams - 8
Came in for criticism after last week’s games but this was much more like it from the young Welshman. After the assist for Jones, his performance was flawless.
Joel Matip - 8
Continues to lead from the back when available. Crucial that he stays fit for the coming weeks.
Fabinho - 7
Another assured performance filling in at the back. Making a case to remain a central defender in the future.
Andy Robertson - 7
Recovered from an early injury scare to give his usual wholehearted performance. Started many of Liverpool’s best moments in attack.
Jordan Henderson - 7
Captain, leader, BBC Sports Personality nominee. Juts great to have him back – always available, always helping his teammates
Gini Wijnaldum - 8
Alongside Henderson, he forms a duo with a relentless desire for running. Offers such protection to the Reds, allowing Jones to enjoy more freedom.
Curtis Jones - 9
The 19-year-old was unlucky not to score early on when his effort hit the post. Outstanding even aside from the goal and taking full advantage of the injury crisis to stake a huge claim for a regular starting berth.
Mohamed Salah - 7
Left frustrated on occasions when he didn’t receive the pass he desired. Had half-chances but was crowded out more often than not.
Diogo Jota - 6
His pace and direct running was a real threat all night before he was replaced. Made the wrong decision on a couple of occasions whilst a poor touch let him down on others.
Proved his worth in his half-hour cameo. Unfortunate not to score when he was denied by a fine save. Link-up play was Mane and Salah was on another level.
