Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has admitted he loves Liverpool hero Gini Wijnaldum as a player.

The 30-year-old has been superb for the Reds this season, remaining almost a constant in the team, as well as producing consistently strong performances.

Wijnaldum was again excellent in Liverpool’s 1-0 win at home to Ajax on Tuesday evening, helping them qualify for the last-16 of the Champions League.

Speaking on BT Sport [via TEAMtalk] after the game, Ferdinand was full of praise for the Dutchman, outlining why he adores him as a player:

I got to be honest: I love this player. He’s very selfless, his intelligence, he’s underrated completely because he can play every single midfield position in that central area.

He’s plays a No.10 role for Holland, the way he defends here [for Liverpool].

Wijnaldum has always felt an underrated player during this wonderful period at Liverpool, such is the subtle nature of his excellence.

He will rarely make headlines in the way many of his teammates do, but he is the definition of a key cog in the machine.

The Netherlands star could leave Liverpool at the end of the season, with no new deal agreed, which would be a huge shame.

It could be that Wijnaldum isn’t universally lauded until he moves on, when he potentially leaves a gaping void in the Reds’ midfield.
