Virals: James Pearce claims Liverpool are set to persevere with Ben Davies

Liverpool signed Ben Davies from Preston North End during a chaotic transfer deadline day scramble to bolster their defensive ranks.

Arriving on the same day as the Reds completed the loan signing of Ozan Kabak from Schalke, Davies must’ve believed all his dreams had come true in making a move to the then Premier League champions.

However, despite the ongoing issues at centre-back including an injury to Kabak – the 25-year-old still awaits his first outing as a Liverpool player.

Albeit struck with injury, the Barrow-born defender in the main has been fit and available for section – simply overlooked in favour of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams by Jurgen Klopp.

This has understandably led to questions as to the defenders future beyond the end of this campaign, questions James Pearce has sought to answer for The Athletic this week, as cited by Anfield Effect on Twitter.

Having previously been heavily linked with a move to Celtic, many might’ve expected Liverpool to sell for a profit this summer.

Prior to his arrival on Merseyside, Davies had played 19 times in the Championship – earning an average Sofacore rating of 6.99 along the way.

Whilst it’s very Jurgen Klopp like to persist with a player, keeping the 6’1 ace beyond the desperate situation of this season would be a strange call.

All being well Liverpool will have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and perhaps Nat Phillips at least to choose from next term.

Seemingly unwilling to trigger the £18million deal to sign Kabak permanently, the Reds are instead some way down the line towards signing Ibrahima Konate – another who would immediately jump ahead of Davies in the pecking order.

Both for club and player a summer sale would make the most sense – freeing up a squad space, wages and bringing in useful transfer funds whilst allowing Davies to continue a promising career.
