Virals: AC Milan receive double injury boost ahead of first Liverpool trip

Liverpool will get their 2021/22 UEFA Champions League campaign underway on Wednesday night when AC Milan visit Anfield.

The Reds welcome the Serie A giants to Merseyside for the first time in their history despite the distinguished reputations of both clubs.

Albeit the sides have never met in earlier rounds, two memorable finals in 2005 and 2007 give the European night a little added spice.

In the build-up to the clash, AC Milan have received a double injury boost, as reported by Corriere dello Sport (via MN24) and cited by The Anfield Talk on Twitter.

Football fans all over will be well versed in the threat posed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s mooted return, whilst combative midfielder Franck Kessie – linked with Liverpool – would be a huge bonus to Stefano Pioli’s side.

Ex-Manchester United and Barcelona star Ibrahimovic has been out of action since May with a knee injury, whilst 24-year-old Ivory Coast international Kessie picked up a muscle injury in training recently.

AC Milan are unlikely to have Olivier Giroud at their disposal however as the former Chelsea striker tested positive for Covid-19.

Jurgen Klopp could face a selection dilemma of his own for the clash should Roberto Firmino, Takumi Minamino and James Milner remain unavailable.

The Reds face three games in six days for the first time this season, with the European clash coming three days after a trip to Leeds United and two days prior to a meeting with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Whatever the two lineups, Kopites will be relishing the opportunity of showing a fellow European superpower a famous atmosphere after 18 months without Champions League crowds at Anfield.

matchday.
