Paul Merson urges Liverpool to swoop for Wolves star Raul Jimenez

Liverpool have been urged to make a move for Wolves striker Raul Jimenez by former Premier League star Paul Merson.

The Reds are facing the prospect of a prolonged spell without Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah when the African Cup of Nations gets underway on January 9.

That will see Jurgen Klopp without a duo that has already provided a combined 41 direct goal contributions this season.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Merson has offered Jimenez as a potential solution to the issue.

Liverpool need to sign a centre forward like Raul Jimenez in January – and not just as cover for the African Nations Cup either. They need someone to come in while Sadio Mane and Mo Salah are away, yes. But I think they need someone for the future too. They need a player who can put pressure on the front three and help them win league titles consistently for the next few years. It’s no good coming second for the next five years. Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino are very good players but I still think they need a proper centre forward and if they brought in Jimenez he would play.

So far this season the 30-year-old has scored three times and provided two assists in 17 league appearances.

Overall, the former Benfica man has netted 37 goals in five Premier League campaigns.

Valued at £19.8million and under contract at the Molineux until 2024 (Transfermarkt), any move for the Mexican would be an expensive one.

Having already stripped Wolves of Diogo Jota, returning for the 91-cap star would be an audacious attempt.

Despite being a top performer since arriving in the top-flight, Jimenez is now 30 and Jurgen Klopp would be reticent to spend big on the frontman.
