Four Findings: Salzburg 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool progressed to the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday night, following a hard-earned 2-0 win away to Salzburg.

Each side traded intense attacks in a wild and open first half, with the Reds having the better chances.

This could have easily become another mad one – had both sides been sharper it could have been 4-4 at the break.

Eventually, Liverpool’s quality shone through and their relentlessness began to take a toll on Salzburg, who began to break as the Reds shifted into a higher gear.

In the 57th minute, Sadio Mane drove into the box and chipped a cut-back to Naby Keita, who rose and headed home. Two players who spent formative years with Salzburg momentarily shattered their former side.

A minute later, Jordan Henderson launched a deep pass to a sprinting Mohamed Salah, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted a finish from the most acute of angles.

If the first goal did not ensure the win, the sensational quality and timing of Salah’s scoring certainly did.

Here are four findings from the match.
