Danny Murphy slams Gary Neville for his comment about Liverpool

Danny Murphy slams Gary Neville for his comment about Liverpool

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy has slammed Gary Neville for his comment about Alisson being Liverpool’s most important player.

The former Manchester United star, now a pundit for Sky Sports, claimed that the Brazilian shot-stopper was the most important member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad but speaking to TalkSport, Murphy didn’t hold back in his criticism of Neville’s comment when asked if he agreed with it.

He said:

He’s just being Gary! No logical football person [would agree with that]. Of course, Alisson has helped. He’s a wonderful goalkeeper, he’s added confidence, solidity and he’s made great saves but I look at it very simply and it’s a very simple equation. “Could Liverpool win the league with another goalkeeper?” Yes. Could you replace [Virgil] van Dijk and think they can still win the league?”

Murphy then joked that the Reds probably would have won the title without the Dutchman this season as they’ve been so good but said that the defender would be much more difficult to replace than Alisson.

[Van Dijk] is not far off being irreplaceable, there is no one like Van Dijk. There are other great goalkeepers and [Alisson] is important but Van Dijk is the most important.

Alisson is a great goalkeeper, in fact he was voted as the best in the world at the last Ballon d’Or awards, but Liverpool went on a huge unbeaten run without him earlier in this season, with Van Dijk playing a huge role in helping to protect Adrian.

Whilst the Spaniard has had his issues at times in big games, most notably the loss to Atletico Madrid, the Reds were still able to win plenty of games with him.

Thankfully, the Reds have not had to deal with a lengthy absence from Van Dijk but if they did, I don’t think they’d have the same success as they did without Alisson, therefore, I’d agree with Murphy and did agree with Neville.
