Liverpool ‘named favourites’ to sign star Spanish midfielder in €50m deal

This summer transfer window has already been a rollercoaster through the rumour mill for Liverpool.

So far, the Reds have been linked with just about every top player across Europe.

With that comes the obvious foresight for Liverpool fans to try and look through the smokes and mirrors to see the genuine deals the club could complete.

The likes of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland both find themselves rumoured but deals for the pair are impossible.

One of the more realistic rumours, however, has been in the form of a new midfielder.

This summer has already seen Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum leave the club on a free transfer.

The 30-year-olds contract came to an end in July and Wijnaldum joined PSG on a three-year deal.

A replacement has been mooted and Liverpool have been linked heavily with Atletico Madrid’s Saúl Ñíguez.

Now, the latest reports now suggest that the Reds are now the favourites to sign the 26-year-old this summer.

According to Spanish media outlet SPORT, via Paisley Gates, the Reds are in pole position.

In a screenshot from the Spanish newspaper in Paisley Gates’ report, it also states Manchester United’s interest.

It appears as though Saúl’s departure from Atletico is growing increasingly every day and the Reds could get a fair deal.

Despite his £150million release clause, the Spanish club is prepared to take a fraction of that fee.

According to SPORT, the club are stating that a minimum of £40million will be needed to start negotiations.

However, the report suggests that officials believe a deal could be in the region of €50million (£43m).

It is yet to be seen as to whether the club will actually make a move for the Spanish midfielder just yet.

It has previously been stated that the club had submitted a £35million bid for Saúl but this was later debunked by The Athletic’s James Pearce.

Saúl would be a fantastic signing for the club and would make a great replacement for Wijnaldum.

With Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards in search of a midfielder to contest a first-team spot, the Spaniard certainly fits the bill.
