Noel Whelan tips Liverpool defender Joe Gomez move ‘back home’

Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan has backed Liverpool ace Joe Gomez to move ‘back home’ in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old has struggled for regular match action this season and as a result, could be targetted by Premier League clubs.

Recently, a report from 90min claimed that a host of top-flight sides were keen on the English centre-back, including West Ham and Tottenham.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan suggested that a switch to Spurs would be a wise one.

I think it’d be a great move. You’ve got Ben Davies playing as a left-sided centre-back. Really, you’d like to push him a little bit further forward in that left wing-back role if possible. If you had somebody like Gomez, with his experience at the back, along with Dier and Romero, what a formidable three that would be. I think it’d really make a difference having somebody like Joe Gomez back there. He’d be going back home, pretty much. Charlton is where he started. It would make sense to want to go back to that neck of the woods.

So far this season Gomez has made 14 appearances across all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side – completing 90 minutes on six occasions.

Still only 24, it still seems unlikely that the Reds would be willing to sell the £22.5million valued ace.

Whilst all of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are ahead of Gomez in the pecking order, Klopp is loyal to a fault and would be reticent to cut ties with the Englishman after one below-par campaign.

Previously a favoured partner to Van Dijk, Liverpool should be keeping faith with the talented defender beyond this summer at least.
