Shaqiri knock to be assessed upon Melwood return

Liverpool will assess an injury Xherdan Shaqiri suffered against England in the Nations League further once he returns to Melwood for pre-season preparations.

This morning, Liverpool posted a statement on the official club website, stating that Shaqiri picked up a knock.

The Nations League took place in Portugal over three weeks ago and Switzerland faced England in the third-place play-off. Shaqiri may have only played 65 minutes, but was forced off by manager Vladimir Petković.

The Swiss international has had a satisfactory and humble beginning at Liverpool, contributing 17 goals in all competitions.

This included that essential assist to Gini Wijinaldum which resulted in Liverpool’s historic comeback against Barcelona on their way to Champions League glory last season.

He was used frequently and efficiently by Jurgen Klopp at the start of the season, playing more on the right-hand side due to a 4-2-3-1 system.

However, in the back end of the campaign, Klopp went back to the original 4-3-3 which left Shaqiri no choice to be on the bench.

Shaqiri is now on holiday and will come back to Melwood in a fortnights’ time where his calf will be examined by Liverpool’s medical staff.
