Alexis Mac Allister was the star of the show for Liverpool as they secured a 4-3 UEFA Champions League win against Villarreal.

The Argentine midfielder scored a brace and produced a spirited showing in the centre of the park to continue his fine run of form this season.

The Reds are slowly clicking into gear under Andoni Iraola and have now won three games in a row under the Spaniard.

And Mac Allister feels he is really enjoying his football now when compared to what was the case under Arne Slot last season.

“Last season something wasn’t right in the group and this manager changed it, and that’s really important,” said Mac Allister to Amazon Prime via ESPN.

“The way we play is quite different, I don’t like to compare but I am really enjoying it.”

“I would say 35 minutes into the first half, we made some changes. I dropped to the middle to keep more possession because we were not playing well. In the second half, we scored the goals, which is important.

“The idea was to play more on the right and open up more. We did it quite well but we were not dominating the game. After that, the manager changed and we did well.”

“Now it’s more man-to-man. You have to communicate less. Last year, it was more like a zonal thing. I like both. In the national team, we do zonal and it works.

“It’s about us taking the responsibility. It’s one of the changes. Now it’s easier, you think less but run more.”

Slot won the league at Liverpool and will be remembered for his achievements. However, as Mac Allister pointed out, the brand of football last season was a bit drab, so Iraola’s arrival has proved to be a breath of fresh air.
