Virgil van Dijk warns ‘ears will be tested’ as Liverpool find two new weapons for Champions League

Liverpool booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals with a professional 3-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux on Friday night, swiftly exorcising the demons of their Premier League collapse at the same ground just three days prior.

Arne Slot’s side became the first team to secure a spot in the last eight, ensuring they will be the name everyone wants to avoid in the hat following the conclusion of the weekend’s remaining ties.

After a frustratingly familiar goalless first half, the Reds exploded into life after the interval, with a quickfire double from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah effectively ending the contest before Curtis Jones added some gloss to the scoreline.

The Ngumoha factor

For all the pre-match talk of rotation, it was the inclusion of Rio Ngumoha that set pulses racing. Starting his fourth game of the season all of which have come in domestic cup competitions the teenager found himself under the microscope. Earlier this week, Steven Gerrard became the latest high-profile figure to call for the youngster to see more Premier League minutes, but the club’s stance remains one of cautious nurturing.

In the first half, Ngumoha offered a glimpse into why the hype is reaching a fever pitch. He was arguably more unpredictable than his senior counterpart Cody Gakpo, yet he often found himself isolated against a sea of orange shirts At 17, the physical toll of the English game is a genuine concern the cautionary tales of Stefan Bajcetic and Jayden Danns loom large in the medical department’s mind.

However, as Wolves tired in the second half, Ngumoha began to find his rhythm. His feet, described by many as “remarkably fast,” allowed him to navigate tight spaces, and while his final ball occasionally lacked the polish of a veteran, his ability to drive at defenders provided the spark Liverpool desperately needed.

The deadlock was finally broken just minutes after the restart. A penetrative pass from Cody Gakpo released Mohamed Salah, whose involvement sparked a frantic sequence that ended with Andy Robertson drilling a low strike into the bottom corner.

The momentum shifted instantly. Robertson, turning provider, whipped in a trademark cross for Salah to double the lead, before Curtis Jones effectively ended the contest with a composed finish in the final quarter.

Wolves managed a late consolation through substitute Hee-chan Hwang in additional time a goal that denied Alisson Becker a clean sheet.

Alisson, who had a difficult outing at Molineux on Tuesday, was largely a passenger for much of the night, with Wolves failing to test him until the dying embers. Interestingly, Giorgi Mamardashvili remained on the bench despite expectations of rotation, leaving the Georgian goalkeeper still waiting for his next opportunity to impress.

Speaking after the final whistle, Virgil van Dijk was quick to emphasise the importance of the reaction following Tuesday’s league disappointment. Despite the Wirtz return providing a boost to the squad morale, the captain focused on the task at hand and the emergence of the club’s latest starlet.

“It was very important. It was a very disappointing last 20 minutes of the game on Tuesday. We had to put it right. The FA Cup is very important for us this season, like it always is,” Van Dijk told reporters.

When asked about the performance of Ngumoha, the Dutchman was glowing in his praise but echoed the manager’s sentiment regarding patience.

“Rio (Ngumoha) was outstanding. I’m very pleased for him. We all see what a special talent he is in terms of his 1v1s and the way he drives at players. He’s a good boy, we look after him, and he’s got to keep learning. Today was a good day for him.”

With a trip to Wembley now looming on the horizon, Van Dijk made it clear that the hunger for trophies has not dissipated under the new regime.

“Silverware is always our aim. I’ve been privileged to experience so many good nights and win silverware with this beautiful club. Now we focus on the next game, a very difficult game in the Champions League, where our ears will be tested again!”

For now, the Liverpool faithful can head back to Merseyside satisfied. Revenge was served, a star was born, and the road to Wembley remains open.
