Wijnaldum continues to be cagey about Liverpool future

Gini Wijnaldum has again hinted that his Liverpool future could be in doubt, providing a touchy response to a question regarding his contract situation.

The Dutchman has been a fantastic signing since joining from Newcastle United back in 2016, proving to be understated figure in the Reds’ midfield.

Not only has Wijnaldum’s industry been vital to the cause, but he has also chipped in with big goals, most notably scoring twice against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final in 2018/19.

The 30-year-old is on international duty captaining the Netherlands currently, and speaking to Het Parool, he was spiky when quizzed about his Liverpool future:

I can’t say anything about that. Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don’t they answer?

I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.

I still think it looks most likely that Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, when his current deal expires.

By that point, the Dutchman will have spent five seasons at Anfield, and given the relentless job he has do for the Reds, there may be signs of him slowing down.

For that reason, offering him a new deal could be deemed a risk, with younger players like Naby Keita and Curtis Jones stepping up to the plate instead.

Wijnaldum remains a key man for the time being, however, and if he were to extend his stay at Liverpool, it would be far from a disaster.
