James has doubts over Liverpool’s potential move for Alaba

David James is not convinced that David Alaba would represent a logical signing for Liverpool, acting only as a short-term fix.

The Austrian has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent times, as Jurgen Klopp looks to tackle his defensive shortage.

Alaba could leave Bayern Munich in the next transfer window, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, via the Daily Star, former Liverpool goalkeeper James highlighted why a move for the 28-year-old may not make sense:

I’m just trying to work out what system they would play if they had him in the side.

He is a phenomenal player. Watching him in the Champions League, he is scary going forward. Liverpool would want him – any top six of English clubs would want him.

But it’s what you do once you’ve got him. These short-term fixes have long-term consequences because you end up pushing someone further down the line.

It’s whether it fits into the Liverpool plan.

One thing Liverpool have been very good at over the years is their recruitment, since Klopp took over, so if they weren’t thinking about him before they wouldn’t be one of their targets.

James makes a good point about Alaba not necessarily representing the long-term, but if Liverpool have a chance to sign him, they should snap him up.

He is still only 28 – far from old as a footballer – and his world-class ability speaks for itself, having been such a key man for Bayern over the past decade.

While there is an argument that Alaba’s arrival could limit playing time for young players, his quality and versatility would make him a great addition, much like Thiago.

It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will make a move for the defender, but they need to keep building as a team. Signing players of Alaba’s calibre can only be a good thing.
