Liverpool dealt transfer blow as Chelsea set to hold talks with David Alaba

Liverpool have been dealt a potential blow in their reported pursuit of David Alaba, with Chelsea set to hold talks with the Austrian over a January move.

That’s according to Bild journalist Christian Falk on Twitter, who claimed that Alaba’s agent will discuss a possible move to the Premier League club. Paris Saint-German and Real Madrid are also touted as contenders to sign the Bayern Munich star.

Liverpool have been linked with a January move for Alaba in recent weeks as Jurgen Klopp looks at potential defensive reinforcements. It looks as though Chelsea have jumped to the front of the queue, though, as the Blues continue to seek out illustrious transfer targets.

Alaba joining Chelsea would be a blow to Liverpool, not only because it would mean missing out on him, but also because it would strengthen one of their rivals.

At 28, the Austrian might not be a spring chicken in football terms, but he is a world-class defender – one who is both versatile and brimming with quality, not to mention having vast experience at the top level.

Alaba would be a very shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should the situation change, but no concrete interest has appeared from the Reds yet, suggesting he is not on their radar moving forward.
