Perhaps the most well-documented part of Liverpool‘s season thus far has been their wretched luck with injuries.

The reigning Premier League champions have seen their title defence thrown into potential turmoil as the colossal centre-back partnership of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk were ruled out for the majority, if not the entirety, of the 2020/21 campaign.

With the January transfer window just over four weeks away, the Reds are expected to at the very least run the rule over some possible options in terms of central defensive additions.

With that in mind, we have had our own look at some of the potential targets…

Ozan Kabak was a major link during the summer and the 20-year-old Schalke defender could be looking for a way out from his current club’s struggles.

Another Schalke defender in Malick Thiaw is on the radar of the recruitment team at Anfield, as per reputable German outlet Bild. Capable of playing as a holding midfielder and valued at just £1.8m, Thiaw could represent a viable option.

Another youngster in Dayot Upamecano would represent a signing with oceans of long-term potential. At just 22 and with plenty of Bundesliga experience already under his belt, the Frenchman is widely sought-after, especially given his impending release clause.

If reports are to be believed, Liverpool are furthest along the line with a move for Dutch starlet Perr Schuurs, who has been described as the ‘new Matthijs de Ligt’, having reportedly submitted a £27m offer for the Ajax man.

Alternatively, the Reds could go for a short-term fix in Ezequiel Garay, who is a free agent after leaving Valencia. The Argentine was reportedly offered to Liverpool recently, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Jurgen Klopp is a stickler for loyalty to those who have served him well during his tenure, none more so than to Joel Matip, who more often than not has stood up to be counted when asked .

However, the Cameroonian has his own injury battles and can’t be relied upon for a prolonged period; and whilst both Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have put in high-quality individual showings, both are lacking in the requisite experience to lead the back-line.

Klopp isn’t necessarily short of possibilities as January approaches – although there could be a premium attached to any deal given how badly defensive reinforcements are needed.
