Leeds United urged to sign “perfect fit” Divock Origi in January

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has urged the club to sign Divock Origi in January.

The Belgian has fallen well down the attacking pecking order at Liverpool this season, barely getting a look in and playing just eight minutes of Premier League action.

It could be that the Reds allow Origi to leave in the imminent January transfer window, especially if it frees up funds to sign a new centre-back.

Leeds could be a possible option for the 25-year-old, and speaking to Football Insider, Whelan outlined why he would be an ideal addition to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad:

I would like to see Leeds show a bit of intent in the January market and go and sign a striker who has experience in the Premier League.

We need a player that will be complimentary to the side and Origi is the perfect fit.

He comes from great stock at Liverpool. He likes to run in behind, he is a powerhouse, has pace, strength and aerial ability. We predominantly down those wide areas so he is ticking a lot of boxes for me.

We only have one out and out striker in Patrick Bamford. God forbid he suffers an injury this season because then we are left very, very bare up top.

We do not have that quality that is going to get those important goals. Tyler Roberts is not a recognised striker and he does not have the physical presence which is needed.

It seems increasingly clear that Origi has no long-term future at Liverpool, given his lack of playing time this season.

He often doesn’t look in-tune with the rest of his teammates when he does play, resembling a square peg in a round hole.

If the right bid arrives, it makes sense for Origi to be moved on in January, generating funds and getting rid of another unwanted player.

The striker will always be loved for what he did against the likes of Tottenham, Barcelona, Everton and Newcastle United back in 2018/19, but those days feel a long time ago now.
