‘Difficult’ – Andoni Iraola provides triple Liverpool injury update ahead of Chelsea clash

Liverpool and Chelsea will lock horns at Anfield tonight in what promises to be an intriguing Carabao Cup clash.

With a place in the quarter-final up for grabs, two Basque coaches in Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso will lock horns as the latter prepares to return to a place he knows well.

Alonso was adored at Anfield during his spell as a player, but the Reds will look to compound his misery after their recent defeat vs Tottenham.

Speaking ahead of the game, Iraola provided an injury update on Florian Wirtz, Dom Szoboszlai and Victor Munoz.

Wirtz injured his ankle during the win against Brighton, while the latter two have missed recent games due to minor issues of their own.

And while Iraola confirmed that Wirtz could feature against Chelsea, the likes of Munoz and Szoboszlai are likely to be rested for the Premier League clash against Arsenal this weekend.

“We still have to wait,” said Iraola in his pre-match press conference.

“We train later. Florian [Wirtz] was quite fine and optimistic he would be available. And with Dom and Victor I’m not so sure. I don’t want to say no but I think it’s more difficult than Florian.”

Liverpool will be better off giving Munoz and Szoboszlai more time to recover, while Wirtz can be used as a supersub in the second half if they are chasing the game.
