Report claims Joel Matip could be out for the rest of the season

Liverpool could be without Joel Matip for between three and six months, according to Football Transfer Tavern.

In what could be a devastating blow for the Reds, the Cameroonian could miss the remainder of the season with the groin injury he picked up against West Brom.

Matip limped out of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at home to the Baggies on Sunday afternoon, adding to Jurgen Klopp’s injury woes.

At the time, the 29-year-old’s injury didn’t necessary look too serious, but this new report suggests otherwise.

It states that Liverpool are ‘extremely worried’ that Matip could be missing for several months, joining Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the treatment table.

If true, this will be a monumental blow for Liverpool, with Matip such a key player this season, when fit.

Unfortunately, the centre-back is incapable of staying fit for prolonged periods – he is yet to reach 30 Premier League appearances in a single season for the Reds – which is even more problematic when Van Dijk and Gomez are also out for a long period of time.

Even if Matip isn’t out for as long as is being claimed, this only further highlights the need to sign a new centre-back in January.

Liverpool surely can’t expect to go all the way in the Premier League and Champions League this season if they are having to call upon youngsters Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips regularly.
