Liverpool interested in signing Braga centre-back David Carmo

Liverpool are interested in signing Braga centre-back David Carmo in January, according to Record [via Sport Witness].

The Reds have the opportunity to sign a new defender this month, as they look to get by without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Some reports have claimed that Jurgen Klopp will not look to bring in a centre-back, but that hasn’t stopped constant rumours linking them with defensive reinforcements.

Lille youngster Sven Botman is one who has been tipped to make the move to Anfield and now Carmo is believed to be an option, too.

It is noted that the 21-year-old has a €40million release clause in his Braga contract, although managing to negotiate a lower fee isn’t ruled out.

While Klopp’s faith in his squad is admirable, it could be a huge risk not signing a centre-back this month.

With Van Dijk and Gomez expected to be out for the whole season, and Joel Matip in and out of the side, having to relying on youngsters Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips could adversely affect Liverpool’s hopes of silverware.

It is essential that a new face comes in – Klopp may only buy someone if he feels he is a long-term option, which Carmo appears to be, given his age.

He has won an average of 2.9 aerial duels per game in the Primeira Liga this season, which is superior to Van Dijk (2.4), Matip (2.3) and Fabinho (2.1), when they have been available.
