Centre-back signing ‘under serious consideration’ by Liverpool, says James Pearce

A new centre-back is now ‘under serious consideration’ by Liverpool, according to The Athletic‘s James Pearce.

The Reds find themselves in their most dire situation yet at the back, with all four of their leading central defensive options out injured.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term absentees, while Fabinho missed Thursday’s win over Tottenham and Joel Matip was replaced at half-time after suffering ankle ligament damage.

The need to sign someone before deadline day on Monday has never been greater and Pearce claims that Liverpool are genuinely now looking at possible short-term fixes.

He states that ‘inaction is no longer an option’, with the Premier League title race and top four battle to play for, as well as the Champions League.

Liverpool have reached the point where it is simply inexcusable not to make a new signing.

While finances may be tight at the moment, given the effects of the virus troubling the world, there are cheap options out there.

Someone like Neven Subotic is a prime example, with the 32-year-old now a free agent, and a player who worked brilliantly under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

It doesn’t need to be a long-term acquisition, or an individual with a world-class ceiling – just somebody who can fill the gaping void for the time being.
