Liverpool have enquired about signing Issa Diop on loan

Sources close to West Ham claim that Liverpool have enquired about a loan move for Issa Diop this month, according to The Athletic.

Jurgen Klopp is on a late search for a new centre-back before Monday, with the Reds suffering a crisis in defence.

Not only are Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term absentees, but Joel Matip and Fabinho are now also out, too.

This latest update states that Liverpool have expressed interest in signing Diop on loan, but West Ham are only keen if there is an option to buy the £18million-rated defender.

The 24-year-old is currently behind Angelo Ogbonna, Craig Dawson and Fabian Balbuena in the centre-back pecking order at the London Stadium.

Diop is a signing that would make perfect sense for a number of reasons, even though it doesn’t look likely.

The Frenchman already has lots of Premier League experience – he has made 69 appearances in the competition for the Hammers – meaning he shouldn’t take time to adjust at Anfield.

At 24, he is also at a good age, and if he did shine at Liverpool on loan, he could be viewed as a long-term option.

There may be a reason why Diop has been frozen out at West Ham, but at a time when Liverpool are desperate for a centre-back, beggars can’t be choosers.
