Alisson needs to be dropped ‘for a few games’, claims Ally McCoist

Jurgen Klopp should drop Alisson for the next few matches, according to former Scotland striker Ally McCoist.

The Brazilian has been a wonderful player for Liverpool, but he has experienced an awful couple of games recently.

He gifted Manchester City two goals in their 4-1 win at Anfield, before a mix-up with Ozan Kabak at Leicester City on Saturday proved crucial in the Reds’ eventual 3-1 defeat.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist made a huge claim, saying Alisson should be dropped for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig, and beyond:

It’s a crazy thing to say but they, particularly the goalkeeper, just look absolutely shot to pieces of confidence.

I never thought I would be saying it, but it might be the best thing for Klopp to just take him out for a few games and put the young lad Kelleher back in.

The two mistakes he made against Man City were poor enough, and you can accept your keeper is going to make a mistake, but his one at Leicester… I’ve watched it three or four times and I’m saying to myself, ‘where is he going?’.

I don’t understand what he’s thinking about! When your confidence is low like that, you don’t make good decisions.

It might be time to leave him out for a few games and bring the young lad in.

It is easy to see where McCoist is coming from – Alisson could be mentally fragile at the moment – but Klopp has to back his goalkeeper to get out of his current funk.

The 28-year-old is arguably the best in the world in his position on top form and he must be backed to come good. Throwing Caoimhin Kelleher or Adrian into a Champions League knockout tie would be a huge risk, given the pressure of the situation.

Alisson will find his best form again eventually – this is merely a blip in an otherwise stellar Liverpool career.
