Kevin Campbell lauds ‘brilliant’ Liverpool target Youri Tielemans

Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell believes Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans would be a ‘brilliant’ replacement for Gini Wijnaldum at Liverpool

This comes after the 24-year-old Belgian has been linked with the Reds in recent days as Jurgen Klopp goes in search of a Wijnaldum successor.

The Dutchman looks set to join Barcelona in the coming days after cutting ties with the Anfield club on the final day as the 30-year-old ran down his contract on Merseyside.

Former Arsenal and Everton man Campbell has told Football Insider that Tielemans would be a superb addition to Klopp’s squad.

Tielemans would be a brilliant signing. I think he would fit in at Liverpool perfectly. He will add more of a goal threat as well, especially from range. He is a very good footballer and he would be very capable filling the void left by Wijnaldum. Listen, when you are Liverpool and you lose a player like Wijnaldum you have to replace him with quality. Wijnaldum is so underrated and when he is not there Liverpool miss him.

The central midfielder was recently named in Belgium’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 and is potentially set to add to his 37 caps for the number one ranked team in the world.

In the 2020/21 campaign, Tielemans stored nine times and registered six assists across 51 outings in all competitions – earning an average Sofascore rating of 7.15 in the Premier League.

Signing the £49.5million valued star from a bona fide league rival would be a huge coup for the Reds.

Despite the obvious difficulties in pulling off a deal of such magnitude, reports have suggested the Belgian was left ‘devasted’ by Leicester’s failure to obtain Champions League football – something Liverpool can offer.

Under contract in the East Midlands until 2023, the Anfield hierarchy would have to pay up for the star – but given the quality involved and perhaps more importantly the ace’s impeccable availability, it certainly looks like a worthwhile expenditure.

Klopp’s side has lacked goals from midfield, an area the FA Cup final hero would go a long way towards addressing.

matchday.
