Michael Thomas pinpoints key position in need of strengthening

Former Liverpool midfielder Michael Thomas has pinpointed the position most in need of strengthening at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s squad are set to put their unbeaten start to the new season on the line once again tonight as the Reds face La Liga champions Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Despite the impressive beginnings, Klopp has admitted there is still room for improvement on Merseyside.

Speaking to Caught Offside, Thomas, a former Liverpool man of 163 appearances, suggested that the German boss must bolster one area of the squad.

In my opinion, another winger that carries a goal threat will help a lot with all the competitions Liverpool finds themselves in.

The 54-year-old also spoke about the race for the Premier League title and was adamant he would still put ‘money on Liverpool’ to come out on top.

This season Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane have a combined 10 goals and one assist in the league.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah has an astonishing 15 goals and six assists in 13 appearances across all competitions.

Whilst the numbers from the first choice wing trio are worthy of mounting a challenge for each and every trophy up for grabs – the drop off beyond them is significant.

Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino have dovetailed well to see the Reds through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, albeit outings in the premier competitions have been fleeting.

Other options would see teenagers included as the likes of Kaide Gordon, Mateusz Musialowski, Harvey Blair and a returning to fitness Harvey Elliott given an opportunity.

As Liverpool prepare for life without Salah and Mane temporarily for the African Cup of Nations, Klopp would be wise to consider an early January attacking arrival.

Possible candidates to bolster the ranks could be Raphinha, Karim Adeyemi and Jeremy Doku.

matchday.
