Liverpool will return to action following an enforced break with an FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury Town.

The Reds will welcome the League One side to Anfield for the second time in two years following a third-round replay in 2020.

On that occasion, a much-changed home side prevailed 1-0 and it will likely be a similar-looking lineup this time around.

Last season Jurgen Klopp’s side were eliminated at the fourth round stage by Manchester United.

Writing in his BBC Sport prediction column, Mark Lawrenson has backed the hosts to reach that point at least once more.

It will probably be a completely unfamiliar Liverpool team, mostly made up of players from their Under-23s or Under 21s, but it is only two years ago since they fielded their youngest ever side to beat the Shrews in an FA Cup replay at Anfield. Steve Cotterill’s Shrews will be awkward opponents for any inexperienced team but the Reds should still have enough quality to win this time too, especially at home.

Lawrenson tipped Liverpool to prevail 2-0 at Anfield.

With Klopp and Pep Lijnders both still in isolation, assistant coach Peter Krawietz held the pre-match press conference and was unsure regarding player availability.

We have one loan player back. He will probably join the squad tomorrow. We are searching for options for this game nearly everywhere. We found enough players to build a team.

Joel Matip will likely join the squad, whilst Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones could also be close to making a return.

Whilst this is perhaps the hardest lineup to predict for many seasons, any Liverpool side should back themselves to overcome mid-table third-tier opposition.

Albeit far from a forgone conclusion, involvement from a number of first-team stars may see the Reds have too much power for their ever determined visitors.

With the Premier League title challenge starting to look like a forlorn attempt, further importance will be placed on the domestic cups and UEFA Champions League – meaning this tie has a certain relevance to the entire season.
