Beale: I’ve been lucky to work with them

Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho both made their returns for the Reds against Porto, playing for Michael Beale’s Under 21 side in a 2-0 loss to Porto.

The two sides were playing each other in the Steel Park Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Both Coutinho and Can played the first 45 minutes of the game and then came off at half-time, something which was planned before the game.

The two looked sharp as they returned to action following an extended break after playing in the Copa America and the European U21 Championship respectively.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Beale reflected on their performances, saying:

“It was fantastic to have Philippe and Emre with us and they did really well in the planned 45 minute outing.

“Their attitude was absolutely fantastic and they were brilliant in the dressing room as well with our young lads.

“It was exciting for the supporters at Corby Town to see players of the calibre of Philippe and Emre in action, and I’ve been lucky to work with them in training this week.”

German midfielder Can will be hoping to impress Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers even more this coming season after a solid first season in the Premier League.

After arriving from Bayer Leverkusen, the 21-year-old showcased his versatility by adapting in both midfield and defence.

Coutinho on the other hand had a very impressive season, scoring five goals and providing five assists in the league.
