Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has opened up about his failed summer move to Barcelona, in an honest interview with ESPN Brazil.
Barcelona failed with three bids for Coutinho throughout the summer window as they went in search of a replacement for Neymar, who joined Paris Saint-Germain.
Coutinho admits that he still respects the Liverpool supporters and always will.
The whole world knows what happened. From the first moment I played here and in the last game, I was very well received – like I always have been for the past four or five years. The respect I have for them [the fans] and the respect they have for me appears to be maintained. What I need to do is to work hard and to always do my best to help the team.
Coutinho went on to confirm that there were offers from Barcelona and revealed his family were interested in him making the move to Spain.
I received a job offer, like in life whatever work you do. Sometimes you’re interested and sometimes you’re not. In this case, like you all know, I was interested. My family too. But it’s like I always said… it’s a great honour to receive an offer for a great club like that. But it’s also a great honour to be here. Liverpool is a great club. I’m here and I’m going to give it my best as always.
The Brazilian made his first start of the season on Saturday during the 1-1 draw against Burnley at Anfield.
The Liverpool fans gave the Brazilian a warm reception upon his return to Anfield, despite reports suggesting he wanted to leave in the summer.
After returning from injury, Coutinho managed to get 78 minutes under his belt before being substituted.
