Damien Comolli reveals Jordan Henderson signing cost him his Liverpool job

Former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli has revealed that signing Jordan Henderson from Sunderland ultimately cost him his job.

Henderson arrived on Merseyside alongside Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Alexander Doni eight years ago, with the midfielder costing the Reds £20m.

After a shaky start to life at Anfield, Henderson nailed down a regular starting spot under Kenny Dalglish and has been an ever-present figure in the squad ever since.

Henderson looks set to lead Liverpool out in successive Champions League finals on Saturday, with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to avenge their 2018 defeat to Real Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

However, it was apparently Henderson’s arrival that reportedly ended Comolli’s two-year Liverpool stay.

Talking to the Independent, relayed in an article by talkSPORT, Comolli revealed that signing Henderson was described to him as a ‘massive mistake’ and was a key reason in his Anfield departure.

I remember the day I was sacked, the owners told me, Jordan Henderson what a massive mistake it was. That was about the only thing they told me.

If Henderson and Liverpool triumph in Madrid, it will be the Sunderland-born midfielder’s second major honour with the club, after helping the Reds to the League Cup back in 2012.
