Frank de Boer ‘hopeful’ that Virgil van Dijk will be fit in time for EURO 2020

This season has seen plenty of challenges for Jurgen Klopp and his squad.

One of the biggest and most impactful may be the injury to Virgil van Dijk at the start of the season.

Just 5 games into the current season, the Dutchman sustained an ACL injury against Everton.

Van Dijk has been a huge loss for the club this season and his absence in defence has been felt.

The Reds have conceded 39 goals in the Premier League this campaign, compared to 26 at this point last season.

With an expected return at the end of this month, Van Dijk is edging closer to making his way back to the pitch.

It is unlikely that he will feature again for the Reds this season given there is just four games left of their season.

However, Netherlands boss Frank de Boer is hopeful that the defender will be fit in time for this years Euro 2020 tournament…

Speaking to ESPN, the former Barcelona defender has high hopes that Van Dijk will feature for Oranje next month…

It would be a shame for the Reds not to see the Dutchman feature for the club again this season.

His injury was a tough one to come back from, and it is understandable if Jurgen Klopp was to stay precautios.

It may also work out well for Van Dijk to keep building his fitness given being the Netherlands captain.

The Euros is a massive tournament and with the Netherlands fourth favourites, it is understandable if Van Dijk is keen to play.

Hopefully, if he does feature, he will come back with a good amount of game time behind him to kickstart next season.

matchday.
