Diogo Jota’s incredible start at Liverpool compared to two Reds legends

Diogo Jota’s magnificent start to life at Liverpool has been compared to Kevin Keegan and Sir Kenny Dalglish.

The Portuguese is in sensational form for the Reds, scoring eight goals in just 12 appearances since joining from Wolves.

Jota found the net in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Leicester City, meaning he is the first-ever Liverpool player to score in his first four home league games in the top flight.

The 23-year-old has been a revelation in the opening months of the season, suggesting Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards have again worked wonders in the transfer market.

BBC Sport‘s Garth Crooks went as far as to compare Jota to Keegan and Dalglish – two of the greatest attacking players in the club’s history:

The impact Jota is having on Liverpool since his arrival on Merseyside has been quite extraordinary.

It normally takes a player anything up to three months to settle into a new team, particularly if that arrival is after the season has started. Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish had similar impacts when they arrived at Anfield in the 1970s but there are not many like that.

Portugal striker Jota has not only hit the ground running, he’s setting records. Four goals in four consecutive games at Anfield gives you some indication of his influence.

Leicester, who have been tipped as one of the teams that might compete with Liverpool for the title, looked ordinary at best and even out of their depth on occasions. The main reason was due to their inability to handle Jota, who looked electric.

Jota’s arrival at Anfield just might be the reason they retain the title.

The fact that Jota is being likened to such legendary Liverpool players says everything you need to know about the start he has made at Anfield.

While some players take time to settle, he has been superb from his debut onwards, shining with his pace, directness and end product.

Liverpool were always crying out for someone to rival Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino for a regular place in the starting lineup, and Jota is exactly that.

It is still early days, of course – his form could suddenly dip, for all we know – but the current signs suggest the Reds have signed a gem of a footballer.
